Australian universities seem to be attracting Indian students by the droves and have become the second most popular choice for Indian students looking to study abroad, after the United States.
According to officials engaged in student recruitment in India, there are 42,000 Indian students in Australian universities, outnumbering by far their counterparts in the United Kingdom who number 22,000. It is estimated that by mid-2008 Australia will have 60,000 Indian students. Australia’s popularity among Indian students can be attributed to a combination of factors — the fee structure, the infrastructure, the competitive cost of living and a safe atmosphere.
The most popular courses in Australia for Indian students include information technology, science, engineering, biotechnology, hospitality and now aviation.
While the number of students from India are rising, the number of Indian students seeking permanent residency in Australia was decreasing. According to student recruitment officials, where once 95 per cent of Indian students used to apply for residency in Australia, the percentage had now dropped to 60. India itself is becoming an attractive place to return for jobs. However, Indians continue to make up the third largest migrant group in Australia after the British and New Zealanders.

Hopefully Australia can convince those Indian students to work for the country to fill-up the skilled workers shortage.
