According to several reliable sources, including the BBC, economic boom and increased production levels have rendered Australian industries eagerly seeking skilled workers and the Australian government is responding by recruiting thousands more skilled workers to fill these gaps in the labour market.
There are concerns that without the thousands of accountants, health professionals and hairdressers migrating to Australia, the country’s booming economy could falter due to the skills shortages experienced in many industries.
The official unemployment rate in Australia at present is just over four per cent, a 30 year low after 15 years of strong economic growth.

Australia continues to attract skilled workers by various means, including staging of expos both inside and outside Australia. One such huge expo is being held at Sydney on September 29th, 2007. According to the Australian Minister of Immigration and Citizenship, Australia sees clear benefit in attracting skilled workers and applies range of initiatives to attract skilled migrants, especially to regional areas.
The news is also good for potential or aspiring migrants to Australia because unemployment in Australia at this moment is at a 30 year low and with strong economic growth and an ageing population, the country needs more skilled workers. In particular, there is high demand in the health, IT, finance, trade and hospitality sectors, and the engineering, mining, oil and gas industries.
At these expos, people interested in Australian immigration can talk to employers interesting in sponsoring overseas workers through the employer nomination scheme, the regional sponsored migration scheme and the temporary business visa programme.
There are also skills expos planned for the UK towards the end of 2007, which are expected to attract huge reception by the qualified student and other skilled communities in the UK.

According to the Australian, as many as 15,865 Indians sought permanent residence in Australia under the skilled migration programme in 2006-2007, making them the second largest group in the category after Britons. Even people with power, position and wealth in India are choosing Australia thesedays for the quality of life this country offers.
India ranks second amongst the top five countries of origin for skilled stream entrants. Britain leads the way with 24,800 skilled migrants coming Down Under, followed by India (15,865), China (14,688), South Africa (4,293) and Malaysia (3,838).
Apparently, despite steady economic growth for the last decade or so, Australia is facing a serious skills shortage with the ageing workforce retiring in greater numbers. The country is competing for skilled workers with other developed countries in Europe, the US, Canada and New Zealand.
The average age of skilled stream entrants (primary) is 31 years. Out of a total of 148,200 permanent visas granted during 2006-07, 97,920 were permanent skilled visas, representing 66 percent of the total migration programme.
The top occupation for skilled stream entrants is accountancy (10,688), followed by computing professionals (4,044) and registered nurses (2,088). Other top professions included mechanical engineers, civil engineers, marketing specialists and general managers.
